How to Write a Blog Post Fast: 5 Tips

Are you wondering how to write a blog post fast instead of staring blankly at your computer screen for hours? I used to be that person who would drag blog post creation over several days, only to keep on finding faults in my content both before and after hitting the publish button. The entire process was a mental headache.

Since then, I’ve thankfully discovered and implemented methods that have helped me become a better and speedier content creator. On most days, I can now enter a natural writing flow instead of battling a bad case of writer’s block and feeling lucky to get 200 words down. So, want to know how to write blog posts faster? Read on.

Use SEO to Speed up Topic Research

Whilst you may have a vague idea about what you want to write about next, it’s all too easy to spend hours deciding what that post title should be, which is where writing blog posts for SEO comes into play. If you don’t know, SEO stands for search engine optimisation, which isn’t nearly as scary as it first sounds.

Creating blog posts that are SEO-optimised from the start is crucial. Like many new bloggers, initially, I didn’t have a clue about SEO and made the all-too-common mistake of putting it on the back burner and focusing entirely on Pinterest. Whilst Pinterest can be brilliant for new bloggers, algorithm changes are frequent and out of your control. In my case, I went from being able to get hundreds of clicks through to my blog instantly after posting a pin to virtually zero impressions. And I was far from alone in this new algorithm struggle.

The truth is that blogging and SEO are entirely intertwined. Good SEO research and practice should determine your blog post’s basis. Creating blog posts is all about answering reader questions and thoughts, which they’ve entered into Google or a competitor search engine. Your goal is to solve the reader’s questions so that they leave your site feeling satisfied they got their answer and you achieved an impressive average session duration. You need to be writing blog posts for SEO with purpose and not choosing a subject matter because it interests you alone.

Nowadays, I always select a minimum of 5 keywords before creating a blog post. My favoured research tool is Keysearch, which includes a difficulty score and search engine keyword suggestions. There are some really expensive SEO subscription services out there (Semrush, I’m looking at you), but KeySearch comes in at just $17 per month, equivalent to just shy of £14 if you’re in the UK like me.

Using KeySearch, you can type a general term into the search bar and see all the search terms that people are typing into Google. By looking through these suggestions, you can assess which keyword is best for search engine ranking and precisely what your topic and post title will be. Generally speaking, the secret to success is high search volume and low competition.

On the left-hand side of your KeySearch screen, you’ll see who your competitors are and where they’re ranking on the first page of Google. Before committing to target a keyword, ensure that your competitors’ domain authority, or DA for short, isn’t significantly higher than yours. If so, your chances of currently ranking on the first page for that specific search term are low.

Writing blog posts for SEO is a whole other blog post in itself, and I’m still learning along the way, plus laboriously updating older content with poor SEO practices. The best advice I can give is to become obsessed with learning SEO from the beginning of your blogging journey.

Time Yourself Whilst Writing

Writer’s block happens to even the most seasoned content creators. It’s possible to spend a whole hour writing just 100 words if you’re not careful. To combat this problem, I’ve started timing myself as I write. I challenge myself to complete a 1000-word blog post or more in 90 minutes. On other occasions, I set a timer for 30 minutes and see how much I can get down on the page in the duration. Work on your post, nothing else, and don’t stop until the timer sounds. So, how to write a blog post fast? Apply some pressure.

Use Writing Tools for Proofreading

Proofreading is one of my least favourite tasks. Sometimes no matter how many times you go over and over content, writing errors still slip through. I now use three writing tools to make the process easier. The first tool I use is Grammarly. Grammarly isn’t perfect and can occasionally make poor suggestions, but it’s transformed my writing process. Just copy and paste your text onto the platform; it automatically checks for grammatical and spelling errors, incorrect punctuation and misused words. I have a horrible habit of overusing commas, which Grammarly highlights in a split second.

Secondly, I like to hear my content read back to me by using a text-to-speech platform. For this, I use NaturalReader. It’s important to know that your writing flows with a persuasive tone and is engaging for the reader.

Lastly, it always helps to be consistent when it comes to capitalisation. Whilst it’s possible to do this yourself, I prefer to use Capitalise My Title. This little tool helps me in mastering how to write blog posts faster and saves precious brainpower.

Write a Bad Draft, Edit it Later

How long does it take to write a blog post? It’s all too easy to lose track of time and be less productive if you try and edit as you write, a process that won’t help you if you’re looking to master how to write a blog post fast. Instead, get that chaotic first draft down on the page first. Productive writers know not to go back and faff over every last sentence until the content outline is complete.

Writing blog posts for SEO can also help in this department, as you have a general gist of the tone and language to implement in your draft from the get-go.

Save an Ongoing List of Ideas

Come up with an idea for your next blog post at 1 in the morning? Write a note to yourself on your phone. It’s best to get the idea out of your head instead of waking up in the morning trying and failing to remember. This way, when you’re ready to work on your blog, you’ll be able to get going immediately. Never underestimate the importance of momentum in the art of blogging.

  1. Writing a bad draft is key, because that means giving yourself permission to put words on paper. If perfection comes in the way, that page will never be filled. Thanks for this!
