5 Signs of a Cerebral Narcissist

We all need some narcissism to function healthily in life. However, at a certain point, an excess of egotistical traits tips into pathology.

There are several different types of narcissists. However, not all formally exist in clinical research. Instead, the subtypes of narcissistic personality disorder present through patterns of behaviour. In this article, we’ll explore one of those subtypes, the cerebral narcissist.

What is a Cerebral Narcissist?

A cerebral narcissist is a type of narcissist who values intellect, knowledge, and perceived superiority above all else. They may often boast about their accomplishments and try to impress others with their intelligence or expertise in a particular subject. Unlike other types of narcissists, cerebral narcissists do not often seek attention or admiration through their physical appearance or material possessions. Instead, they rely on their perceived intelligence to feel superior to others.

Intelligence Bragging

This type of narcissist may brag about their intellect or expertise in a particular subject. Cerebral narcissists often place a high value on their intelligence and may constantly try to impress others with their knowledge or skills. They may also belittle or dismiss the ideas and opinions of others, particularly if they do not align with their own.

Asexuality

Many often wonder, is the cerebral narcissist asexual? It is not accurate to say that all cerebral narcissists are asexual. Sexuality is a complex and multifaceted aspect of human experience and can vary significantly from person to person. Some cerebral narcissists may be asexual, while others may have a strong interest in sex and engage in sexual relationships.

Having said this, this form of narcissist often prefers activities that emphasise his intellect over physical, sexual interactions. Some narcissists of this nature may even be celibate. Whilst total celibacy is rare as a trait, it’s more common amongst cerebral narcissists than neurotypicals.

Pretentiousness

Cerebral narcissists are generally appalling snobs. They will brag about the prestige of their school, qualifications or seniority of their job. They may mock you for not being knowledgeable about a particular subject or mispronouncing a word. They often belittle or dismiss the ideas and opinions of others, particularly if they do not align with their own.

Perfectionism

Cerebral narcissists tend to be perfectionists and may become frustrated or angry when they cannot achieve the high standards they set for themselves or when others do not meet their expectations. Like all narcissists, they often blame others for their failures or shortcomings and may struggle with taking responsibility for their actions.

Intellectualisation of Emotions

In relationships, cerebral narcissists may try to control or manipulate others to maintain their superiority. They may also be emotionally distant and struggle to form genuine connections with others. Many narcissists of this type are prone to intellectualising their emotions and will explain them in great detail rather than naturally experiencing their feelings.

The Bottom Line

It is important to note that not all individuals with high intelligence or knowledge are cerebral narcissists. Many brilliant individuals can use their skills and abilities to contribute positively to society and make meaningful connections with others.

However, if you’re dealing with someone who continually mocks you or insults your intelligence, you may be dealing with the cerebral form of narcissistic personality disorder. Remember, a narcissist needs to devalue you as your power threatens them. Realise your worth, and learn when to walk away.
